Did you know that this year's ballot will include several judges? If you would like to view the results of the BWLA Judicial Evaluations, click here and visit The Alliance of Bar Association's ratings page.

BWLA is a member of the Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening. The Alliance schedules interviews and investigations of judicial candidates and provides a forum for candidate presentations and interviews by the participating bar associations. The Alliance is composed of the following bar associations: Asian-American Bar Association, Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago, Chicago Council of Lawyers, Cook County Bar Association, Decalogue Society of Lawyers, Hellenic Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Lesbian and Gay Bar Association, Puerto Rican Bar Association and the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois. BWLA served as the Co-Chair of Alliance Executive Committee meetings from 2005—2007, represented by Zeophus Williams along with Co-chair Lonny Ogus of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers.

The Judicial Evaluation Committee, is responsible for scheduling BWLA members who are trained to interview and investigate potential judicial candidates who appear before the Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening. There have been several judicial appointment candidates recommended by the Supreme Courts over the past few months submitted through the AOIC. At this time we are scheduling the interviews/investigations for judicial candidates for the February 2008 Primary. Immediately following the Primary we will be doing the interviews of the retention judges. Chief Judge Timothy Evans has advised that the next associate judge applications will also be made available and that will produce 200-plus potential applications!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need volunteers to assist with this arduous task. We want to ensure that the voices of African-American women attorneys are heard in the selection process for potential judges before whom our members will practice. We need a steady stream of trained interviewers and investigators to make sure there is a BWLA “presence” in each interview room during the next few weeks. Please contact us directly or via the BWLA office at 312-554-2088 if we can count on you to help BWLA meet its commitment to improve the administration of justice.
